On the 10th of August I was weeding the zinnia bed and semi-tripped over my little wire fence. I didn't fall, thank goodness, but had (and still have) a doozy of a bruise.

Pharaoh was giving me trouble about coming in at night and I left him out about 40 minutes.

I went to Bernadette's and played with Padreic and helped clean out Gareth's room a bit. She told me the coming operation will take out the appendix, which makes sense.

My driver's license renewal came. Too late to get an appointment, especially with the medical issues.

I went to the pizza party for Sharing God's Bounty. I really pigged out. It's amazing how many people are involved in so many jobs... besides cooks and servers there's publicity and volunteer liasons... I sat next to Peter Mithin and Boyd Keenan. I felt a little silly saying why I was there, but as a founder, and hospitality early on, and as Rich's widow, I was OK. I said I didn't do much now but bring coffee and both Ann and Jim said I was also a generous donor.

My jaw hurt on the way home. I don't need a heart attack just now, TYVM.

I finished the jigsaw puzzle in 9 days. It has 5 pieces missing, but 31 pieces that didn't belong to this puzzle. I took it up to Niki.

August 11 was second Saturday breakfast. I spent some time looking for my Social Security card so I can get a Real ID driver's license. I stopped at Lazy-Boy on the way home and got some glasses. I took them up to Vince and Niki but they didn't want them.

August 12, Father had a LONG homily. He's very excited about the Mass and eager to share it. Then I went to Communion at the nursing home. It's been a long time, since before the disastrous Pittsburgh trip.

I ordered face masks for the smoke in Oregon.

August 13. I finally got my appointment to get the results... very disappointing. Basically Svetlana, who is a very nice lady but NOT the doctor, read me a black and white copy of the color report I got from the doctor. They're going to refer me to a surgeon. I was in tears when I left and went to Bernadette's. She was too wrapped up in her World Con plans to be sympathetic. I tried calling the doctor's office to find out the name of the surgeon, but of course it didn't work. So I don't know any more than I did before.

I walked over for a geocache, which I actually found.

August 14 I drove back out to the office to get the surgeon's name and phone number so if they call while I'm gone, as they did, in fact, I could call back for an appointment. It turned out there's no phone service at Crater Lake so I couldn't check in at home until Friday, and couldn't call the surgeon's office till Monday, but I got an appointment for Friday! I had to replace the bulb in the back hall.

There was a Pilgrim's pizza party, and this time I didn't pig out quite so much. I gave a little speech about Casa Leopoldo in Palas de Rei. I bought wine for the trip to Ashland and packed my Ashland glass, but couldn't find my beaded covers for the glasses!

And, finally, Wednesday the 15th, I could start my Oregon trip. I packed two duffel bags, one for Crater Lake and the other for Ashland. My sandwich was too big for a regular sandwich bag! Finally, I left the house at 7:47. I drove and drove (past a field of melons!) till 9:48, the Corning rest area. I needed to get out and stretch even more than I needed a potty break! What a nice rest area, where I've probably never stopped before. Look at all the olive trees! Is there a geocache here? (My pocket query assumed I was taking Highway 99 instead of I-5.)

Lots of smoke!

At 11:39 I was at Castella, looking (unsuccessfully) for a cache. I had waved gaily at the rest area where I saw the eclipse last year. After the fruitless search I stopped at the RRPark resort to ask how they were doing with the smoke. I'd put on my mask at Redding because it was really bad there. There were "thank you" signs to firefighters on all the overpasses. My favorite was "thank you for kickin' ash."

I ate my sandwich at the resort and decided not to stop in Dunsmuir, maybe on the way back. (no.) I went on to Weed and couldn't find the cache at the totem pole, but fortunately stopped at the gas station for a potty break. I say "fortunately" because the rest area on hwy 97 was closed.

Dorris Flag

I didn't notice there was a cache in Dorris (and in a store, I really could have found it!) till I was just past the turn to it. And no real place to turn around. Oh, well. I did stop and take a good look at the second-highest flagpole in the world, which we had watched being built, back in the days when we would drive to Spokane on 97.

I stopped for gas in Klamath Falls, next to the Super 8 where I stayed when I went up alone to get Vince (when Rich bought the van!) Actually, leave them alone for 25 years and they change everything! Then when I took the turn for Crater Lake I started looking for geocaches, but only found one of the ones I had marked. I stopped at the overlook for Annie Falls, and finally got to Crater Lake about 4:30. I registered and got cabin D1.

Then I tried to call Vince, and discovered there was no phone service. So I left a note at the camping check-in, but decided, sensibly, not to trust that and sat on a log overlooking the parking lot while I read a book. Sure enough, I saw them, about 5:30, and told Niki just to register to see if they got the message... nope. They were camped about .4 miles away, further when I walked around the long way.

I sprang for dinner and had pork chops with mustard, cornbread and butter, and green beans. Yummy. And I bought A.J. his first stretched penny. I spent the rest of the time at Crater Lake looking for an album, but they finally managed to get one (and two more pennies) on the way home.

August  2 I wasn't going to leave the house at all, but I found some books of McClellan history in Hoarder Central and thought I'd try donating them to the air museum. They were delighted. While I was out I finally took the coffee I've been carrying around to Ann, who takes care of the donations for Sharing God's Bounty.

I called Carol to find out how her colonoscopy went. Better than mine, it appears.

The 3rd was Bonnie's birthday so I called her, which was fun. She was quite amused with Joanna's plans for Boxcar Children camp when SHE is a grandmother!! We discussed falls, too.

I was at Bernadette's from 10-1, helping sort through books, old board books out, slightly more grownup children's books to the living room (including some I took over which Padreic enjoyed), Joanna's books to her bookcases, Gareth's books to his. You can sure tell this is a family of readers!

Then I took some books to the library. (MY books, not hers, which she wanted to take to Little Free Libraries.)

Day 4 of a jigsaw puzzle I was trying to do before I go to Crater Lake. It was going fast, but it was obvious there were lots of pieces of another puzzle, as well. So I had no idea if I had enough pieces of the real puzzle. I would only know by finishing it.

I love watching Safari Live, and I also went onto the computer for an extra hour after the tv show was over. I just love it. I really want to go with Benson next year, but Zimbabwe is still roiling, and South Africa is looking a  bit odd too.

On Saturday the 4th I got a free breakfast at the WPAC breakfast, so I left a tip and went out full and flush. One of the ladies had her daughter die of cancer. I feel, sometimes, like i've been dancing between the raindrops.

Willie (Bill) is going to be homeless at the end of August so will be coming to live with me for awhile. This will have some advantages... he can clean out the rain gutters which are full of driy leaves and palm seeds, and will be here if I want to take off for an overnight or two.

I was a bit appalled in the morning because Pharaoh ran into the kitchen with his rat-chasing look. Didn't spy any long tails, though, and the dog relaxed.

Sunday the 5th I went to Mass and Father asked us to pray for him. Apparently he's been the subject of some gossip, which isn't true, but he got a "canonical warning" (in other words a wrist slap) by the Bishop.
While in church I had a bad pain in the gall bladder area. I really don't need to add that, do I?  However, it's gone now, so it was probably gas.

I kept thinking there was something I wanted to do this afternoon at 2, but of course I didn't remember what till 4:30, so I missed the Knights of Columbus ice cream social.

Charles Spinks, my friend whom I never met, the guy who went on the Camino 5 days ahead of me, died. :(

So. The doctor told me to come in to his office on the 6th, so I thought maybe I could do an end run around Kayla the unhelpful receptionist by calling the doctor's office directly. Michelle, his receptionist, didn't call back till the afternoon, and told me the doctor is not in his office on Mondays. Why did he tell me this? I will see this through, with the Nurse Practitioner Svetlana, on Monday the 13th, and get my operation, but I am definitely going to deal with some other group next time. I liked Svetlana, I liked the doctor, and the nurses were fine, but I can't take the stress.

I was trying to remember who I gave the baby gate to. I guess it was Pagan.

On Tuesday the 7th I went to breakfast and updated the ladies on my medical frustrations. First off, though, I listened to Jackie's stories, and it was something like having a MadLibs read to me, without any of the blanks filled in. I had to use a lot of imagination!

Then I went down to Elk Grove and read to Padreic and played with him while she worked on Joanna's stuff. She's going to have that room all cleaned up so Joan can trash it.  Apparently J. complains that they don't have a decent guest room (and I've stayed at Joan's, so this is a bit hypocritical.) Anyway, I helped a bit, but mostly by keeping Padreic busy. I took a box of "food" and dishes (tiny Tupperware) to him and he was thrilled. I took the dehydrator to Bernadette. (When I dug it out I found a box, kind of a shelf which used to hold vinyl records, apparently, in the bar area and now it has scrapbooks in it)

Because of the smoke, it was possible that Vince would cancel Crater Lake, but now, a few days later, it seems like it'll be OK. I decided I would go anyway.

The 8th I apparently lost my Tac glasses, no idea how or where. Early in the morning, I removed some trumpet vine from the side yard.

Then I walked over to see the doctor. I was waiting in the room and he tapped on the door and opened it and said "sorry!" and backed out! That was puzzling. When he finally got back I teased him about being afraid of me and we had a good laugh. What had happened was he wasn't quite through with the other patient and just opened the wrong door.

He also took his time with me. He updated my shot records (though I'll have to correct one next time. I told him I'd had an injection for Typhoid but it was actually Yellow Fever.) He checked on the colonoscopy stuff and I told him how frustrated they are making me. He listened to my heart and lungs and felt my neck for lumps and, woe, looked at my feet. The prescription is to put Vicks Vapo-Rub on my toenails three times a day for one or two years! OK then. He said I was mildly depressed and I argued the point. It's because I don't sleep well.

Still, it was a satisfactory visit.

Once I got home again I went to the commissary for a big re-stocking (and of course, I already have two more items on the next list (oatmeal and RealLime)). It was over $220, so I'm sure glad I don't do this monthly. In fact, the last BIG one was in September, with a medium one in March, and I go pick up this and that approximately once a month. For the big ones, I go through the checkout and tip the baggers ($10 this time. Rich would have a cow.)

When I was putting the food away I heard the back toilet gurgling. Has that been happening since the cleaners were here?  And if so, why didn't I hear it when I was putting papers in the back?

The temperature was back at triple digits.

On the 9th, I slept 9:30-2:40 and then went right back to sleep till 4:30.

I watched Gordon Ramsay's new show. He's doing a Sacto Restaurant next week. The post-show reviews don't look good. I believe I'll skip it.

I took the car in for its 122+K mile check-up. All it needed was a tune up and a replaced third brake light. (I hadn't even known I HAD a third brake light!) I took a long shuttle ride home, through downtown and East Sacramento, but that's nothing, he was in Rancho Cordova when I called him back so it took more than an hour. It's OK, though. At least I got to spend some time at home.

And THAT was interesting. Because it's Thursday, I took the dog poop bag out to the trash. While I was puttering back there, I decided to lop some of the lowest branches on the mulberry, so I opened the shed door to get the pole lopper. Like a flash, Pharaoh jumped into the shed and trapped and killed a squirrel right before my eyes. He was so proud of himself!  He strutted out of the shed (thank goodness. I really didn't want to try to get the corpse with all the junk all over the floor and shelves) and brought his trophy to the porch, where I was waiting with a plastic bag. Then, as I took it to the trash, in front, I could hear him back in the shed. He then presented me with a dead young rat. So back into the house I went for another plastic bag (AFTER shutting the shed door!) and took THAT body to the trash! At least it's trash night!

And yes, I lopped the branches, and when I put the pole lopper away, I had the dog shut in the house.

I got new TacGlasses when I drove home. I see Sprouts has come into the grocery store that used to be SaveMart! If my food storage wasn't so chock-a-block full, I'd have checked it out, but maybe in a week or two.

That night, Pharaoh was still full of himself and wouldn't come in when I called him. I got the flashlight, which is usually the magic tool, and he still wouldn't come in. So I got a newspaper and whapped him when he came in. The next day again he didn't come in and I left him out for a couple of hours. Since then he's remembered to come when I tell him. (Which was something I taught him after Rich died. He needed to know who was boss, and it isn't him.)

The 10th, I was weeding the zinnia garden, one foot in my garden, one in the neighbor's yard, and I tripped over my little wire fence. Fortunately I didn't fall, but I sure got a big, painful, bruise.

I went back to Bernadette's, and again helped mostly by letting Padreic show me stuff. "Look!" every little thing he does. That and he starts every sentence with "no." "Are you going to put that in the dollhouse?" "No, I'm putting it in the dollhouse."  Bernadette says he inherited it from Rich, who was very contradictory. "Why do you contradict everything?" "I don't contradict all the time!" he would say, contradicting me.

I finished the puzzle, 9 days, 995 pieces. There were 5 missing, but they didn't really ruin the picture.  There were 31(!) pieces that didn't belong to this puzzle. No, I didn't pack them up with the puzzle!

My driver's license renewal came. I can't get an appointment until I know when my surgery will be. This is so frustrating. I did spend some time looking for my social security card, which I'm sure I used when I got my TSA pre-check number. Oh, well. I did find a piece of paper in my tax papers with the full number in it. And today I talked to Joan M. who didn't have an appointment but went at 0630 in the morning and got it taken care of and home by 9. So I'll do that.

I was invited to the Sharing God's Bounty board meeting, which was at a pizza place. I was amazed at how this ministry has grown. When it came time for me to speak I talked about the start, 35 years ago, and how Rich and I were in on the planning. How he did security/parking for something like 20 years. How I don't do much since he died except provide coffee.  (Ann said there was more, but I didn't want to brag up my donations in his name.) I sat with Peter Mithin and talked to Bill Durborough.

I really pigged out on the pizza. And on the way home, my jaw hurt. I'm thinking imminent heart attack (no, if I get a heart attack, I want to do it in Svetlana's office!) It stopped when I got home, though I had it happen a little the next morning.

I was too late to see most of Safari Live live on the TV, but I managed to get to it overtime on the computer while I was finishing the puzzle. And it was exciting. There was a leopard (Hosana) stalking prey (and not getting it) and a hyena baby!

The next morning was the second Saturday breakfast, and I saw many of my friends. Mostly I talked to Marty.
Afterwards I went to Raley's for my prescription, and to Lazy Boy to look around (lots of pretty stuff, but I actually don't want any more overstuffed furniture in my living room. Something more like Bernadette's gliding chair which was initially Roni's.  I don't like the new covers Joan put on that chair and stool so I've told her I don't want it. I got 4 glasses.

On Wednesday the 11th I drove Debby to Vina, the Cistercian Monastery.  They were dedicating the church, which has been added on to the former chapter house made from the medieval stones of Oliva Monastery in France. Rich and I had watched while they started this chapter house and visited when they'd finished, and I've been back a couple of times, with WPAC, then Laurie and then Brenda.  I was talking and overshot the turn-off, so we were about 15 minutes behind when I thought we would be and ended up sitting behind a pillar, but it was still a special Mass with chanting and Latin (fun for the convert!!) and incense and all. Then we had wine and a nice lunch buffet in a tent before we stopped at the winery and came home. (This time I missed the turn to Yuba City so ended up in Oroville, so it took a little longer to get home, but as a compensation Debby taught me a better way to get through Marysville.

The 12th I only dug one tulip bulb out. I went to Bernadette's in the morning and picked up some of the mess while she had a dentist appointment. Back at home I changed the kitty litter out, did laundry, and fixed stuffed peppers with a southwestern rice hamburger mix topped with mozzarella.

On Friday the 13th I finished season 4 of Chicaco P.D. and discovered one of the season 2 NCIS episodes has gone missing. Maybe I accidentally let it get erased.

It turns out I waited too long to sign up for the Mississippi River cruise next April. Darn it, it looked like fun.

I went out to thrift shops and a bookstore and found 4 Boxcar children books for Joanna.

Carol and Frank were leaving just as I was so she didn't get a chance to tell me they had some food for me in their fridge. She called. And so I looked for their key in the plastic bag I keep it in, and it wasn't there! Maybe the cleaners saw it and hung it up, so I took a fistful of keys over, and sure enough, the second one I tried opened the door!  The food was two huge artichokes and a big pack of potato salad.

That night I went to see 1776 at the Chatauqua. Bev didn't arrive in time for the first act, and when I saw it was an all female cast I was annoyed, but it was great. Bev was there after intermission so I could stop worrying about her. Meanwhile, my friend Bill with the Pancreatic Cancer, looks great! He's recovered so well they gave him a new knee and they geocached through a lot of states.

I liked the first act better, but then I believe that's true every time I've seen it.

Saturday I had gotten tickets for us to ride the Sacramento River Train.  Bernadette came by for me and we got down to Old Sacramento early. We stopped at the History Museum to spend some time. I am guessing it's been over 10 years since I've been there and they've surely changed a lot. They had a stretched penny machine so Joanna and Padreic each got one. Then we started walking toward the depot and when Padreic said he would like to get on the train, is when I let them know that's what I planned. We rode in the back coach and got our tickets punched, rode the 3 miles south and then got to watch the engine go down a spur then couple onto our coach.

I was wearing my Wyoming shirt and a guy asked me was I from the state. Turns out he is from Rock Springs and did indeed know the Zs, Joe's family.

I learned two short toots mean "we're starting" and two longs and a short mean "we're coming in."

It was a fun ride and the kids seemed to like it.  When we got off Gareth asked "have you noticed we haven't had lunch?" so he got a bit of a talk from Mommy about how to tell people you're hungry a bit more politely.  We went to a restaurant and Joanna turned into a whiny thorny monster because nobody else had finished their lunch. She was hanging her head with her shoulders hunched and near tears, so I tried to comfort her. A porcupine would have been easier. Turns out she wanted to "do something exciting."

Then we went over to the Railroad Museum, and she got into her "cling-to-mommy-because-there-are-scary-adults" phase. Mighod. She's got to be the saddest little girl in the world.  It was NOT a good day for her. (Oh, yeah, she'd already informed me she doesn't like ballet and didn't want to see "Cinderella" and I'm pretty sure it's just that she didn't want to go anywhere with me. This despite a good camp. I've made myself feel better because I'll take Bernadette, and she can just stay home and maybe rethink her life.) It was the kind of day that makes me say that while I love her very much, sometimes I don't really like her. (I said that to B., and she agrees.)

At that gift shop we got more stretched pennies and I got Padreic his book. He was thrilled.

At home I noticed that after maybe a year, my fridge water filter needed changing. (I've been looking at the light for months, but never saw it go yellow. It was red this time.) I pulled it out to see what it was (but didn't write it down) and went to put it back and jammed it in, couldn't close the filter door. I tried to get the filter out but couldn't, asked for help from my friends, but no, and finally freed it on Sunday by attacking on a different angle.

\I dozed off and woke at 7:47. As it was light outside, I thought I'd overslept through the night, had missed my chance to dig, and would have to hurry for church. It finally dawned on me that it wasn't actually Sunday, but was still Saturday!

Sunday the 15th, I was distracted in church because of Joanna. Grrr.

I ordered tickets for the Kingston Trio (just me), Pinocchio with the kids and Bernadette, and the ballet with Bernadette. These are at Folsom. Last week I got the Mondavi (Davis) catalog for next year and they don't really have anything I want this time.

I was making chicken a la king and dropped it as I was putting it back into the microwave for the second part. And it smelled so good, all over the floor. I was amazed at the dog, who just sat looking at it until I told him it was OK for him to eat it. Such a clean floor!! Sigh.

Monday, I'd thought I'd be done digging by the weekend, but I was overoptimistic. I waited all day for the cleaners. Once they came I called Helena, who is also having a colonoscopy, hers this coming Friday.

I went to the Newcomer's dinner, and took my iPad (in its new cover) so I could show  Bill my wounded picture. He wasn't there, but I did talk to Tom.

I am in 37 different places in Albion because I accidentally opened the perfumer's workshop instead of keeping it for the artist's studio.

July 17 I dug up 14 bulbs, then went to the WPAC breakfast. There were 6 of us. After a nice meal and chat I went to the commissary for a few things. I got home before it got too hot. It's been over 100 the last two weeks.

And at home, Benson asked me to come on safari next year. I really want to! It would be all over Zimbabwe. I asked if I could come early and go geocaching with him around Victoria Falls. It actually sounds like maybe we could do that! So I went to the Road Scholar page and checked it out, and then looked at the Iceland tour.  I called Jean and we firmed up the date. I will sign up at the end of July.

I had found out at the Newcomer's dinner that Gary T. was home again so I called him. He's doing well.

And, of course, I forgot it was Tuesday until Vince called.

July 18 was the day I gave Gareth his promised trip toThe Tech Museum  in San Jose. I got there by 7:30 so as to get to San Jose by 10, but I didn't account for dire traffic especially on 580. There were times I would have to come to a complete stop, then go a few car lengths and stop again.  It was frustrating, but we finally arrived at the parking garage and got to the Tech a little before 11.  The bathroom was the first stop. Gareth was so excited. I got our tickets (free, with a membership at the Powerhouse) and the guy asked if I'd like to donate. I said "yes, but later" and actually did drop $10 into the box as we left.

We stopped at the exhibit entrance and asked how the TechTags (which were the tickets) work. You scan it at each exhibit and at the end of the day you can put the number in at home and see a summary of your day. This sounds good, but Gareth lost his at the first exhibit. Used mine for awhile, but then when we left for lunch he got a different one, which he mostly used but at the end of the day he was back to using mine, and lost it. At the same exhibit. I'd picked up another one so at home I tried to see what that ticket user had done, and this spoiled the chance for Gareth to use the blue, substitute one, since apparently they only register one each day. Oh, well. If we do this next year we'll do better.

I had brought a book and sat nearby while he played. I did, at one point, show him there was another area, since he had pretty well done the whole coding area.  At one point he was encrypting a password and the numbers were flying past and he was covering his ears to help him to focus.  When we went to the different area he was entranced with the earthquake exhibit and with Google Earth.  At 1 I finally suggested we go to lunch, where we spent a whopping 20 minutes.  Back to the area. He discovered the biometrics area, and signed up for a monitor which he wore for about 40 minutes.  (Again, this would be one of the first things if we come back.) Then we went upstairs, where there was my favorite thing of the day, the biochemistry. I helped him put on plastic gloves and a pair of goggles, and then he got a tube of bacteria and a tube of dna, combined them, warmed it, cooled it, spread it in a petri dish, put in the warmer to cook, (after scanning it) picked a cooked one and looked at it for various colors. The whole thing was fascinating.  Another one that he liked was "building bacteria". We turned in his monitor and discovered he's a "confident builder." This is something I really would have liked to have on his tech tag at home. Oh, well.

He stood in line to ride the jet chair in space. Definitely he'd be Major Tom.  There were lots of camp groups, but eventually he got to do everything he wanted to do. He finished on the same exhibit he'd started on, a game of building a network. I was interested to see how he interacted with other kids.

We went to dinner across the street, but didn't stay long enough to avoid major traffic jams on the way home. Gareth said he'd like to go with Joanna and Padreic and I pointed out that they would want to go to some other exhibits when he didn't. Padreic in particular would be bored with a lot of it, though there are areas he would enjoy. I think we would need three adults for the three kids.  I was not the only adult who had brought a book (though I used my iPad more, to report on Facebook) and let the kids do their thing. I had a good time and I know he did, and I may do this again for his birthday next year. However, I believe then I would get a motel room on 1st street by the metro line and ride the train in, and avoid traffic. Rich and I did that when we went to ConJose in 2002. If we did that we might visit, uh, someone who lives here (to quote Gareth, who doesn't remember Aunt Monica's name.)

Anyway, I didn't get home till past 9, but the dog had behaved himself. A nice day!

339 recordings of 59 types (most single NCIS episodes, and I have all of seasons 1 and 2, and most of season 3.) In CPD, one was mislabeled so I'm getting it from Netflix, and I somehow erased 2, but I'm mostly through season 4. 16 of these episodes. 24% clear although that will change today.

On the 5th, the kids and Bernadette left for Oregon. Sniff! I went to the Ladies' Breakfast. Later in the afternoon I went to the WPAC board meeting. One guy had his knickers in a knot about limiting the number who can attend a luncheon. And another woman was complaining, at great length, about the way facilitators are trained. I was properly impressed with how the president got things back on track and we finished the meeting in an hour.

Election day. (I dropped off my ballot last week.) At least we got a Republican into the governor's election, and yet again I wont be voting for Senator. (2 Democrats in the general election. I hate the jungle primary.)

On Wednesday, Pharaoh upchucked. I hope he's not sick. I got a phone call from America's Plumbing to rate it, but I don't see my 5-star review posted.

Thursday the 7th was Vince's birthday. Bernadette surprised him by driving up there with Padreic. (She took my rock tumbler (which Rich had kind of taken over, so I sort of lost interest) as my gift to him.)

My much-anticipated visit to the new doctor was today. I actually had "Doctor Oni" who is a Nurse Practitioner with a long first name that starts with Oni and an even longer last name. He's very nice. I showed him the after-fall picture and this gave him lots of ideas. One thing is the next blood test will also look at my thyroid. I told him about my arm occasionally hurting and he asked if my jaw hurt. No. I didn't remember the Pittsburgh blood pressure but now I do, 156/something first and later 148/something. My actual check up will be in July.

I walked over to the Little Free Library to drop a book off.  And the big thing is I backed up the pictures and the journal entries from last September to today. About time, yes?

Friday the 8th I went to the book sale again, and then went out to Ogre's Den in Orangevale (where I discovered my GPS hadn't loaded the caches I tried to download because the batteries had died.) I asked the guy if I could bring my old Dungeon and White Dwarf magazines, and he said "sure." Yay.

We heard that Charles Krauthammer is dying.  Fishdom had a wild update.  And Glenna is in town and got in touch.

Saturday I had breakfast with WPAC and then lunch with Glenna. We went to Bella Bru, and the food was good though the young man forgot my order so I had to re-order.  We had a nice chat. Steve has gotten a promotion. Also, they're looking at perhaps buying another house. I got the skinny on the grandchildren.

I spent so much money trying to get one special prize (and didn't get it) so I'll be just doing the minimum for awhile.

I went to church in the evening so as to be free on Sunday the 10th, and forgot to bring the checks. Last week I'd gone to the retreat house so didn't leave the envelopes. Church went long. Then stopped by Brenda's trying to get my Oberammergau book but she wasn't home. (It turns out she was walking her dog. She has Ring so knew I had stopped.

This year, as the kids were in Oregon, I went to the Retreat House for the Triduum Retreat. I'd never even heard of the Triduum until I was in college at the Newman Center. We were of the "go on Sunday and holy days" type, and my grandmother would go to Confession every time she was going to go to Communion. We went to Good Friday services. Lent ended about noon on Saturday so we could pig out on candy! For Rich, he was the altar boy with the priest who went from house to house blessing the bread and salt and eggs and who knows what on Saturdays, and got tips and food from the people. This was one of the reasons he loved Easter. But Father Taylor is the one who introduced me, and possibly him, to the whole cycle of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil.

During our marriage, we usually went to these. I didn't always do them all, and sometimes he missed Good Friday. (At least he did in 2011, and I went and was upset with one woman who decided during what was supposed to be silent prayer to go to the ambo and read scripture.) St. Philomene's Easter Vigil was special, at least until our music director left. (And Vince and Bernadette both agree that we miss this one. Vince went at his church, and Bernadette was singing at the one in Junction City. The Retreat House one was beautiful, but not the same.)

So. Thursday afternoon I took the dog to the kennel, then came back to the Air Museum and renewed our membership. Their passes now are virtual, but since I don't have a smart phone I'll get physical cards. (Which came and I printed them out, but the woman who had my old card in her hand really confused it: "Jan and Bernadette Durbin Yarnot." I imagine they'll do.)

Then, because I had a little time before check in, I tried a geocache. Without luck, of course. All the caches in this area seem to be missing, since no one has found one since 2016, with the exception of the one I tried. Oh, well.

I stopped by the kitchen before I went to check in, to give them a dozen of Monica's oranges. They appreciated it and put them out at dinner, and people enjoyed them.
DSC01492

I checked in, and settled into my room, which was on the ground floor this time. It was 90 minutes to dinner, and also it was 88 degrees, so I changed out of the long-sleeved shirt I was wearing. I still had on the Camino t-shirt, and John asked me about it. He was sitting with Susan and I assumed at first they were married, but then he would sit one place and she another, so I was confused. This finally got resolved Easter morning brunch, when I learned they both are on an interfaith team and go to a lot of conferences where they see each other. She may be interested in him, and I decided over the course of the retreat that he isn't so much interested in people as he is in his prayer life. Still, he asked me about the Camino a couple of times. He had gone to the Santiago cathedral when he was in Spain, but not actually walked the Camino.

I went and walked the labyrinth, which I always love. I also visited the library and picked a book that was a bit different, "Until Tuesday." More on this later.

The Labyrinth Library

Dinner was pasta and gravy, some meat, salad, and steamed veggies. I took a roll but skipped dessert (which looked WONDERFUL! They all did. I tried to limit my carbs, with dubious success, but at least no desserts (and one tiny chocolate egg which I simply could not resist!)) Father Giltus gave me a big hug when he saw me. I sat with Elaine, and then she and I sat together at every meal and many of the conferences. John sat next to me and we talked some more.

I tried to limit my talking to myself. If I like the silence I must stop breaking it!!

We had an introduction to the whole retreat, and then the liturgy which started in the conference room with footwashing. I was one of four or so people who didn't do it. It was beautiful though, someone would have their feet washed (one of four stations) and then wash the feet of the next person. Then we went to the church for the rest of the liturgy, the Last Supper. Afterwards they stripped the altar and we left in silence.

After the Foot-Washing

I had signed up to come for adoration at 4:30, so I kept waking up every half hour or so after 1:30 to be sure I didn't miss it. I padded down to the conference room for coffee and had brought Belvita to dunk in it as I do here at home, so I was ready. There was one lady who appeared to have camped out in there... she was on the floor praying but later she lay down and slept (and snored!) a bit. There was another woman there when I arrived at 4:15 and the 5:00 woman was a few minutes late, but I made the full hour.

Breakfast (in silence) was at 8. This one was in silence, but that fell apart at the other meals, which were also supposed to be in silence. Father Tom kept trying to emphasize silence but it didn't work. I myself stayed fairly quiet, though. Breakfast was yogurt, fruit, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and Raisin Bran. (And, of course, O.J. and coffee!)

At 9 we had a Tenebrae service for morning prayer. Father Joe explained about it. It's a monastic prayer. There are 5 candles set up in front of the Crucifix, and at the end of each reading, one is extinguished, until only one candle is left. It is hidden, and there's a cacophony, symbolizing chaos without the light of Christ. Then the light returns and is placed on the altar. I really liked this service.

Tenebrae Service

10 o'clock was the Stations of the Cross, outside. There were numerous distractions for me: the people who brought their little dog, the 4 year old having a tantrum (but I'd like to bring Gareth next year), a turkey with a limp, some class from somewhere playing noisily before they came to do the stations, people not moving to give others room. Still, it was a good experience.

DSC01502 Finishing the Stations of the Cross

Father Tom's conference was on Mark 6:1-6. One thing he said, quoting Jesus, was "My ability to be excellent depends on your willingness to be excellent with me."

Then lunch! Like all the retreats I've been on here, the food was excellent. Pasta with marinara sauce, a roll with butter but l didn't take the mashed potato (sigh) 3 bean salad and a VERY juicy apple. Lunch was supposed to be silent, too, but that was beginning to crumble.

Afterwards I got an Elf help book for Joanna and then went to "Movement and Meditation" where we raised our arms... it didn't do much for me. Then I didn't want to do the art, so I went to take a nap.

At 3 the Good Friday liturgy started in the conference room. It seems there were three Isaiahs spread out over a couple of centuries! Father Tom talked about the "suffering servant" and likened it to the Parkland kids. It's not "why me?" but "who does my suffering help?" In the church we read the Passion narrative, then venerated the Cross, then had Communion. I do not normally have wine, but intended to today (all weekend, actually) but they ran out.

I walked around the grounds, .8 miles. This tired me out.

Dinner was fish and chips, salad and cole slaw.

The evening prayer was for the World. In the part praying for peace I tried to say peace in ourselves, but the word "unworthy" didn't come to me and I mumbled something about feeling incompetent. Oh, well, God knew what I meant.

I went to bed about 8:15 but was awake at 1:45 for awhile. Because there was a skunk outside I had to close the window.

I was really into the book I was reading, "Until Tuesday" by Luis Carlos Montalvan. He was seriously wounded in Iraq and this is about his recovery, and PTSD, and Tuesday, the service dog who helped him. I commented in my diary about him meeting Col. McMaster. About his disappointment with Obama because he never demanded accountability. "Baby wipes, one of humankind's most under-rated inventions." I finished the book at 4 AM and then was able to go back to sleep. I got up at 5:30 and went to the other building to the library to pick up the sequel.

Breakfast was french toast (OK, enough already, I had a piece! But I skipped the potatoes!) sausage, fruit yogurt, raisin bran and O.J. It, too, was supposed to be in silence. The Mindful Movement was walking. I tried, I tried, but I just don't get it. We had another Tenebrae service.

I talked to a man sitting outside about the Camino.

Father Tom is from Pittsburgh. Also, there's a Passionist monastery in Pittsburgh and I've since looked it up, not really all that far from where Rich grew up. This conference was good except we broke into groups and were supposed to discuss one thing but ended up talking about Jehovah's witnesses, and conversion, etc. This way I was able to avoid sharing, and made my escape for lunch. I really don't do well with group discussions.

The Holy Spirit is not a dove, but an EAGLE!!

Lunch was salad, bratwurst, sauerkraut, beans and I had a few chips. Dessert looked lovely, too.

My plan was to sit outside and read, but that didn't work out too well. Elaine spotted my Camino shirt and wanted to know all about it, so we talked about that for about 20 minutes. (Poor Father Tom. He kept asking for silence, with very little success.) She apparently hadn't noticed Thursday night, nor heard me talking to John about it. Finally we were through and I went to a bench overlooking the grounds, got settled in, and sometimes looked up to see John walking the labyrinth. Then I had a nosebleed!

Back in the room, and since it was a bit chillier than yesterday I put the longsleeve shirt again. I was reading, and suddenly saw John walk past my room holding a water glass. What in heck? (My window was overlooking grass, not sidewalk!) So I asked him later and apparently he had a long conversation at the labyrinth with a ladybug. He didn't see it when he'd finished the walk, but it seems to have hitch-hiked back to the building with him, so he was replacing it "fly away home".

Then the fire alarm went off. I went out with my book but without my purse, and mostly without my camera. It did turn out to be a false alarm, but I couldn't get a picture of the fire truck!

There was a short conference about the Sign of the Cross.

Montalvan's second book (Tuesday's Promise) was more about life with Tuesday, and he decided to have his leg amputated so he could have a great prosthesis and maybe start running again. This was a lot of the book, as well as getting back with his family and going to spend all the holidays together. Also, what to do as Tuesday aged... he was 10 and would soon start slowing down, so they planned to have a successor dog, Promise, who would be trained for two years then join the family and slowly take over chores from Tuesday. The book ended on a very hopeful, upbeat, note. And then the co-author's epilog told of Montalvan's suicide, December 2, 2016. Apparently he was having trouble with the leg, had had orthopedic surgery in Australia and Tuesday wasn't there, and was in Houston for further treatment. Without Tuesday. WHY didn't someone come along to take care of the dog while Luis Carlos was laid up? I'm certain that if the dog had been there he'd have noticed the human's mood and helped. This is so sad. And now I know why these books are in the library. (They were donated by a friend of Montalvan's, but that isn't what I mean.)

Supper was stuffed pork chops. Mighty hard to cut, but tasty.

The Easter Vigil Mass started outside, with a fire kindled with flint and steel... Rich always figured that a lighter was flint and steel, but this was a real stone and knife. Eventually the sparks caught. Then I held the book while Father incised the candle and said all the prayers, and then we all went into the chapel. Then he brought the candle in (but I missed the "Lumen Christi!" "Deo Gracias!")
We all had candles, they took the book away from me, and then we took the lights to behind the altar where they were put into sand trays. This is not the usual time this happens, but it worked better with the way the chapel is configured. There were three readings in the dark, then the lights came up for the Gospel! Father Tom read the Gospel of Mark and then talked about it. "When I say 'Jesus Christ is Risen' you say 'Jesus Christ is Risen Indeed!'" And it was pretty much the ending of every sentence.

Then it was time for me to hold the book again while water was poured into the basin and Father blessed it, then put the candle into it, then had us renew our baptismal vows. This time everyone sprinkled water on everyone else. They took the book away from me and went on with the Mass. It was beautiful, and I have a second career now, as a book stand.

Ready for Easter Vigil

We had a social with antipasto, and John wanted to talk to me more about the Camino, but Joyce came up to talk about meditation and he was distracted. I made my excuses and said I'd see him in the morning, and went to bed.

Easter morning, up before dawn, out on the grounds greeting the sun with meditative movement. Also admiring the almost-full moon setting.

Moonset   He Is Risen!

A Continental breakfast in the conference room, then Easter Mass. I wore a skirt. I had the reading from Acts. Father Tom explained each reading before the reader came, and then I wondered if he'd actually forgotten to read the Gospel, as he was down the room folding a sheet with Olivia and then saying "Jesus Christ is Risen!" But when this was done, he headed back to the ambo reciting the Gospel. Then he had a real stemwinder of a sermon. What I took away from it was that Jesus, without the winding sheets, was naked. And it's up to us to clothe Him. Am I ready to be his wardrobe?

Again I held the book for the Baptismal vows, and gave it back to Father after he went around sprinkling everyone.

John saved me a seat at brunch (yummy yummy) because I asked him to (I had to go to the bathroom first) and Susan sat across the table, so the talk was all about prayer. The night before he said he is going to be a grandfather in November so we did talk about that a little.

And so I left, picked up the dog, and attempted to get back to the real world.

Friday the 9th was Renaissance and I was really eager to see the mini-seminar on how the Music and Memory program, to slow the progress of Alzheimer's, is working here in Sacramento. During the inspirational speech we were encouraged to write our own playlist... the very first song I thought about was Peggy Sue, and the rest of Buddy Holly's work, then of course the Everly Brothers, and so on.

I really enjoy the tuna banh mi for lunch, and I'd parked close enough to go after my pillow, so the Time Travel movie, which was "Arrival," was viewable. Very mnd-blowing. I really enjoyed it.

In the evening I took Laurie to Jesuit where we met Bernadette and Gareth, to see "Willy Wonka." To my surprise, the dentist and his wife were there, because their daughter was Veruca Salt. It was very funny and Emma did fine. They all did.

Saturday I changed out the flannel sheets, so of course it got cold.

Pharaoh's DNA arrived. He's 1/4 pit bull, no surprise, but only 1/8 German shepherd. The rest is 1/4 chow, which I don't see at all, and 1/8 gordon shepherd and1/8 Italian greyhound (also a real surprise) and 1/8 who knows what.  Fascinating.

I took a box of nice books to the SPCA. (On Friday I had taken two of these off for the University library and bought a Bernard Cornwell book. I stopped at Trader Joe for biscotti because horror of horrors, I ran out of Belvita breakfast biscuits.  On the way I saw the Cristo Rey High School building. It's nice, but I wish they could have had the Loretto campus. Oh, well.

That night was a church dinner, Filipino food. It was great and I saw a number of my friends. I twitted Pete Mithin on when he was in 8th grade and I was one of the chaperones for a trip to the Manteca water slides. He didn't follow directions not to put his pass in his trunks and ended up with a soggy mess  I helped him redeem. Not surprisingly, he didn't remember this at all.

Sunday I forgot to take a book to Gerrie, and I forgot about Communion at the retirement home until Mass was nearly over, so I told Brenda I wasn't going to do it. Instead, I went down to the Crocker and really enjoyed the new exhibits. (I really have to move the pictures off the camera so  I can share them here!) I got the two Faith Ringgold books for Padreic. Then I walked 1.3 miles around to geocache... one was dubious... I don't know if I found it at all, and have asked the hider, and one had someone having lunch next to it. No luck there.

Sunday
March 4 I went on a WPAC trip for the first time in a couple of years. I had planned to sit in the bus with Thea, and she thought we were doing it too, but Sharon was convinced Thea would be with Donna and she put me with Ray. Uh-oh... while Ray and I have been communicating (ever since I showed him my air museum membership card) lately, there was some tension earlier. As it happened, we got along fine. At the beginning he said "I don't know why I'm stammering" and I said "Apparently I intimidate you. I certainly don't MEAN to" and after that he stopped stammering.

We talked books and travel, seeing President Kennedy and other famous people (I had Milton Caniff, and he knew who that was! I completely forgot Eva Gabor) and it was quite entertaining. When the coach arrived in Antioch we stopped at the Lone Tree golf club for their brunch buffet, and all I can say is.. wow. There was so very much food! I didn't wait for the roast beef, but went through a different line, so filled my plate with so very much good food. Thea and Donna had waited for us to sit next to them, and Ron and Gen were also at the table. I had wanted to tell Ron that I walked across Spain, because he always liked to walk. I also wanted to tell him I'd gone to Africa. And I wanted to tell Gen that my Wednesdays were fun, since she had asked the last time I saw them. I still miss him, though I don't think I showed it. I did find his dithering exasperating while he was trying to find the dining room. At one point I pointed at Ron and Ray and said they were the only two WPAC members I'd been geocaching with.

I ate a lot, but tried to be carb conscious. I was the only person at the table who only had one dessert! There was a lot of merriment going on when Donna couldn't get her dishes picked up and put them on another table... then the people who had that table reserved came in.

I'd noticed a geocache but it would have been too far a walk, so I didn't go for it.

Then the driver wanted to show us some of Belmont, but eventually decided there was too much traffic. So off to the Antioch theater where the Zmed brothers did their Everly Brothers Experience show. Not only did they sing the songs, but told us biographical information. It was really great! Toward the end I found myself in tears, not so much crying for Rich (who was later than most of these songs) but apparently for my lost youth. Which was a huge surprise, since this is the first time I've not been content with my current age.

And so home, a quieter ride during which I pretty well finished my book.

Monday the water people were back, to my surprise. I spent much of the day watching, wondering what they were doing. Finally, as they unloaded the fire hydrant at my neighbor's house, it all became clear. Oh, THAT's what the mysterious "FH" meant!

This is when I discovered the VCR control panel and rescued "Lady and the Tramp." I'm not going to try to get it set up with this television, though, but going to wait until I get the white elephant set up. It dawns on me I will need a remote, as well as speakers. I'd thought I could do it by hand but with a VCR and DVD player I will almost certainly need a remote to get to the different INPUTs.

The olde movie I watched was "Ball of Fire."

I guess I fed Pharaoh twice He doesn't let me know, but then he upchucked. Sigh.

I'd dozed off, and Helena called at 9 something, to let me know it would be OK to stay with her in a couple of weeks.

Tuesday my Fishdom game finally had something I could play, Herman the crab, so I did that. (I'm saving the main games, which get added 15 at a time on Thursdays, till they open the new aquarium, so I can win their goodies to furnish it.

Once again, I skipped the ladies' breakfast. I like the people, but not the restaurant so much.

Movies were "Test Pilot" and "Talk of the Town."

I took a box of books to the library and stopped at the office. They still didn't have my name badge, so I tried ordering it again. I made my reservation for a gambling trip to Cache Creek casino. They had sent Rich an invitation, before he died, and I thought I could use it but called first, what a hassle, but I have a membership now. But I've only gone there one time, in 2012, so would enjoy going back. Without having to drive it!

I then stayed for the board meeting.

On the way home I stopped for cuticle cream, because my fingernails are miserable. I couldn't find the sort ot tube I was looking for, so I got Aquaphor which says it's for cuticles, too.

And it was a nice call from Vince. I'm actually letting him talk occasionally.

The Gummint is suing California over sanctuary cities. Great, I get to pay both sides (as well as the 18 times Becerra has sued Trump. One of which he's lost.) The state is going to pot, and this is how they spend my tax money.

Wednesday, my dreams seemed to mix up Eric's page job with Last Man Standing. Odd.

Wee Wednesday was about the Faith Ringgold exhibit. We started with the "word quilt" book, then upstairs, in front of the quilt, we had the story the quilt tells.Padreic was interested and talked about the first book but we got interrupted with an unneeded potty stop, and he didn't know about grandma's quilt. When I went back to the Crocker on my own to really look at the exhibits, I bought both those books and took them to him and he was fascinated and loved them.

The kids got out early this week, so I was home in time to call the church bookkeeper and get my donations sorted out. I figure the tax people would have taken my word for it, so we'd only need proof if I got audited. However, the bookkeeper mailed the correction right away.

I've got a new game, Alice in the Mirrors of Albion. It's a very involved hidden objects game and I was getting frustrated that it wouldn't let me buy hints and kept freezing on me. I deleted and reinstalled it twice with minimal success, but then I reset the iPad and all was well.

Thursday, the kids were still getting out early, so we went over to Davis to the Raptor Center. It doesn't take much time to go through, but I think Joanna was quite interested. I walked over to look for a cache but there was a woman sitting in a car there. Then when we drove past she was gone and I said that, but Bernadette didn't stop. Oh, well, I'll look for it when I'm going down to San Jose.

Wednesday
the 28th of February I ordered A.J.'s birthday presents, some wooden track and a roundtable.

The water company finally made it to my end of the street, and put their portapotty out in front of my house. They started digging and I left for Elk Grove.

The Wee Wednesday program this day was about sculpture, solid shapes, lines, colors. Padreic talked a lot to Miss Jill at the beginning but didn't contribute when we were up in the galleries. It's such fun to see him growing every week and improving socially.

I was planning to bring the big kids here on Saturday to watch "Lady and the Tramp." Joanna kept coming up with reasons she couldn't. She "was planning to sleep in." That's OK, I'll come after lunch. Then she had some other plans for Saturday.  I finally said to her "look, I know you don't like me, but you're stuck with me." Gareth heard part of this and wanted to know more, but I told him it was not his business.

The TCM movies today were "Grand Hotel"  and "Tortilla Flat."

Thursday we had a record 1.5 inches of rain. Unusually enough, I managed to get back to sleep despite the early wake-up when the rain started. Then it was really pouring.

I saw a palm frond down in the street and luckily the rain was light at that time, so I went out and put it into my yard.  Then, about an hour later with the rain bucketing down, I saw many more fronds in the street. They would be obstructing traffic, so I headed out to get them in. In the end, there were 24! They were down the street and in the neighbor's yard, and I got thoroughly soaked.

When I went out later for a single one (light rain again) I was only out of the house for maybe 2 minutes. It was time enough for Pharaoh to get into the kitty litter (I'd forgotten to put the baby gate back up.) Since it was so miserable outside, I sent him to bed. He knew he was in trouble, for sure.

I'd ordered charcoal filters for the kitchen compost crock. The ones that came were too big, but scissors took care of it.

The tax people called (I was planning to call them this day) so I set up my appointment.

Friday was Renaissance. My hands got SO COLD driving to the campus that I stopped at the bookstore for gloves. They turned out to be $20 but worth it. I am leaving them in the car until the big freeze is over.

The documentary was about Floyd Norman, an African-American animator for Disney. Fascinating stuff. It was more about ageism than racism. In any case, he's still there.

The time travel movie was "O Homen de Ono" from Brazil, which was a real mind-bender. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

We had more rain.

I used a can of salmon from 2010 and made salmon patties. Which were quite good.

My tax form from St. Philomene's came and the bookkeeper missed $600! I thought it was $50 more, but it turns out Mass stipends aren't included.

The TCM movie was "The Time of their Lives."

Saturday I went to the WPAC breakfast. Again, it was crowded, but it was enjoyable. I got back in time to tell the gardeners to skip the swampy back yard, so they cut up the palm fronds.

I was going to have the kids come, but when I put "Lady and the Tramp" into the VCR it wouldn't work (and it has worked with this television, on this particular outlet, before.) Worse, it grabbed the videocassette and wouldn't turn it loose.  It wasn't until I was taking the machine apart, on Monday, that I discovered the control panel. (As I seem to do every time.) Anyway, I called to cancel having the kids. Sulk.

I will have to get a remote as well as speakers for the White Elephant when I set it up, because how else can I go to different inputs?

Sunday February 18 was great fun. I met my geocaching friend Carol in Folsom. The restaurant I was thinking of turns out to be closed on Sunday mornings. Oops. And she got stuck in terrible traffic so was late, but we finally met up.

Her usual geocaching partner doesn't like walking, and Carol does, so this was perfect. For starters, she'd marked a cache I didn't have listed, so looked for that while I dashed back for my sunglasses. Then off we went, off to the trail. There are no new art works since I was here in December, so no new geocaches. Yet. But there were 4 I was unable to get last time. Carol had found one of those, but not the others. And it was such a pleasant day for a walk. I think she and I should go to the Lafayette reservoir one of these days!

We came back in sore need of a bathroom, and hungry, and stopped at Pizza Classico (where I had a salad. Yay me.) All in all, a very pleasant day!

I was watching a show about the Galapagos and learned that a volcano there erupted in 2015!  I must not have been paying attention.

Monday's only event was that I went to the Newcomer's Dinner. I had called to remind John, so he came. He and Bill (a neighbor, on Pounds Lane) had both gone to Grant High School in the 40s, so they had a lot of reminiscences that I found fascinating.

I cleaned out the kitchen pantry (except for the pasta shelf, which I got the next day). SO much vinegar! So much alcohol!  I DID have corn starch after all, so now I have far too much! And so much gelatin!!

I've been watching old movies. TMC has a pre-Oscar special, and so many are interesting to me. So I had to cancel S.W.A.T., that I never got into, and cut out a lot of the How the Universe Works segments (all about how the universe is going to kill us... maybe in 5 billion years, or maybe this afternoon.)

Tuesday, my USAA subscriber bonus came, which would cover the deposit for Oberammergau. I found out that it's not refundable, but for $200 I could transfer it to another program, which might be useful, if I do it and then go with Father Giltus.

I actually made it to the breakfast. I like the people but really am not impressed with the restaurant.

Wednesday I had another nosebleed. Sigh. This gets old.

At Wee Wednesday Miss Jill was gone so Miss Michelle was the leader. She did a "criss cross" rhyme and Padreic learned to sit cross-legged.  We showed Mommy when we got home.  It's a lot better when they sit that way so they dont get in everyone's way.  Too bad Arthur doesn't get it, and too bad Arthur's mom and grandmom don't try to get him to behave.

The parking meter acted up, told me I was paid till 11:30, but when we came out at 11:10 it had expired. There was no ticket, but I thought it should be reported.  I tried calling the number on the meter but it continually kicked me off.  Later, about Monday, I reported online. And yet, the next Wednesday a woman was unable to pay at that meter. She has a smartphone so could do it, anyway.

Back at the house, I was picking up stuff (Bernadette had turfed out Gareth's room and it looked great) and found Joanna's Thanksgiving list.  She's thankful for Grandma, but not for me. This little girl manages to hurt my feelings on a regular basis! She is still not doing her writing. I keep asking why and she doesn't know. I asked Joan to tell Joanna she, Grandma, would like her to do her school writing. That might work.

Thursday I was almost late to the Retreat House, swallowed up by Facebook. But I made it. Again, a huge amount to eat!

I got Pharaoh's DNA kit and swabbed his cheeks. I really am curious.

I have decided not to play the regular levels in Fishdom until they come up with a new aquarium. But I'm OK playing the additional game of Herman (the crab) even if it means (and it did) dropping another league.  They add 15 new games every Thursday, and I've been buying the diamonds at a discount, so by mid-March I should have enough to play the 60 or 75 games I'll have before they go to the "chests." Those games don't let you get new decorations or fish.  When they do open the Wonderland exhibit I can buy a lot of goodies right away.  The fish keep nagging me to go to the store, but I have everything already and the aquaria are stuffed!

This week went by in a flash... I've been playing Fishdom and reading Nero Wolfe, not writing this journal or keeping up with much of anything else. Sunday through Thursday I was watching Safari Live and hoping to win a safari, but sadly a woman from Seattle won.

Monday (the 5th) would have been Rich's 76th birthday. When I changed out the cat box I realized there wasn't enough poop. Later in the week I saw that Pharaoh was sneaking in there WHILE I'M IN THE HOUSE so there's no time I can leave the gate down. He was duly punished but he's apparently too stupid to learn or too obsessed to care.

I watched Marnie.( I'd never seen it before.) I was surprised that it was written by Winston Graham.

I can't stand Adam Schiff. He speaks, he lies. I was happy, later in the week, to find out he got pranked by some Ukrainean DJs, and now I think of him as a buffoon. I think he's lost some credibility (I hope) because of that.

Tuesday my sleep was all messed up and I didn't make it to breakfast. My weight and blood pressure were both down. I dug in the garden a little bit. Turned off the heat and opened windows much of the next few days. (Then it got cold again.)

Pharaoh got into the rawhide I got out for St. Vincent de Paul. He's *impossible* these days.

Wednesday, fun with the kids. At Wee Wednesday Padreic was a little more social, though he was as pushy as Arthur. The hard lesson was "wait your turn."  Then he surprised me by not wanting to go to Wing Ding. (He fell asleep on the way home.)  More of the "Land of Oz" with Gareth and Joanna. Bernadette can't get on Facebook, so I've been writing her, and of course my communications major never communicates.

I talked to my friend down at the school and she didn't like Father Heart-Throb at all his second time through, so I wasn't the only one.

Thursday was my doctor visit. I'd thought it might be a full checkup but it was just a review of the A1c test.  In the 6 months I lost 5.2 pounds. My A1c was 5.9, so much better than it's been all along. It's still in pre-diabetic range but the lowest it's been since they started checking it 3 years ago or so.  He wanted to know how hard it was to be good, suggesting Glucophage. I looked it up when I got home and have decided no, especially if I can get the A1c down farther (not this week, though. I celebrated with a pizza Friday through Monday, and also have been enjoying other carbs, hash browns and toast and jelly, that sort of thing. (And gained the weight to prove it. Easy to put on, hard to take off!))

The doctor also recommended a two-part shingles vaccine with a much higher prevention rate than the one I already had. So I went down to the pharmacy for it... and TriCare doesn't cover it! $200! For the first half! Painful two ways.

I worked on the jigsaw, and went out to the WPAC dinner in Citrus Heights. It's the chicken won ton tacos there, quite good. One of the women there had a terrible time on the Hawaii cruise. Makes me think again about the Alaska one in a couple of years. The person airlifted off at Hilo WAS on that ship but not a WPAC person.

Friday I had a nosebleed, and decided to skip the morning session, mostly because I wanted to carry a pillow to deal with those terrible seats. I gave the teacher a Time Travel book I'd found. The movie was "Time Bandits." Silly. During the week I watched "Terminator" and I was wrong, I hadn't seen it before. For one thing, it came out before I met GoE, so I wouldn't have. It must have been a sequel that I didn't like.

My neighbor came over to tell me they'll be putting a fence in. Darn. I really like it when the dogs see each other and when I can reach over and pet them, especially Patches, the new one. I miss the old days when I could see the neighbors!  Oh, well.

That night I went to the Camino Pilgrim's meeting to see the Le Puy presentation. Not much help about the route from Lourdes.  John was there. He called the next day to see if I was all right, because I left while he was talking to another woman.

Saturday morning I went to the WPAC breakfast, which was nice. Marty and Jim were there. She got really sick on the cruise, and he was disappointed at the Arizona Memorial.

I took the kids to see "The Secret Garden". And I started looking for maps of Nero Wolfe's house. I settled on Stout's sketch of the office but finally adjusted Baring-Gould's first floor to make the second floor work. (Still can't do the third floor and the orchids, but oh, well.)

Had a nice long talk with John on the telephone.

Sunday it was Mass, Communion at the retirement home, and finishing the Rex Stout Nero Wolfes.

I had to leave the retreat early because I had tickets for "Carnival of the Animals" by Circa in Davis. I left here about1:50 and got caught in the usual Sunday traffic jam near IKEA, but arrived at the theater by 2:30 as planned. Then I waited and waited and waited for Bernadette, who was planning to leave the bowling and pizza party the kids were at at 2:00... I began to think I was going to miss it, $135.00 wasted.

Bernadette drove up about 2:50 and got parked and to me by 2:56, so we raced in... to find someone else had our seats. This was a bit confusing (they'd not realized their seats were on the orchestra side) but we were seated and the show started about 10 minutes late or so. Which was our hope, that a kids' show might be a little confused and not that prompt to start.

It was fun, and the kids liked it. Gareth laughed right away, and eventually Joanna started to smile. (The last time we were at the Mondavi she didn't much like the show at all, but that was 3 years ago.)

Bernadette was behind me getting out of the parking lot, but I was a bit surprised when she also followed me on the Reno exit. When she got off at IKEA, I figured it out.

When we went to bed, suddenly Pharaoh upchucked everything he'd had to eat the last 3 days. This was on the tile floor, so while it was an enormous paper towel job, it wasn't too bad. But then he upchucked a small amount on his bed, so I had to rinse that off and then find a quilt for him to sleep on. The next day I properly cleaned his bed and it was dry by bedtime. I guess the dog was anxious about missing me, but next time I bring his own food.

Monday was the cleaners. This time I was ready.

I had two nosebleeds this day!

After the cleaners, I drove out to Citrus Heights, where the other BevMo! is, to the Skechers outlet and I found two nice pair of shoes that DO fit!

Tuesday I didn't feel like going out to breakfast, and in fact I mostly spent the day playing Fishdom!
I also finished the scratch-off map and framed it (though I didn't take the pliofilm off the front of the glass, so will have to do that when (if) I ever scratch off anything else. 17 countries! I also did more on the jigsaw puzzle.

In the afternoon I went to get vitamins, milk, and gas.

My Apple charging card finally broke, after years of abuse. I taped the insulation back on so I can use it till the new one comes. (Which happened Thursday.)

Wednesday was great. The Wee Wednesday program was about the senses and Padreic contributed. The first time was quiet and not really on topic, Miss Jill had said she liked to touch her cat and P. said he had a cat... and Nana has a dog. I was the only person to hear this. Later, though, he answered a question Miss Jill asked him, and to the point. They "planted a garden" and he loved that. Then the exhibit Wing Dings was back, and Padreic didn't want to leave it.

I read the beginning of "The Land of Oz" to the kids, leaving them at a cliffhanger place. Heh.

Then yesterday I went to Mass at the Retreat House. I talked to a fairly new widow and found out her daughter and granddaughter don't talk to her. Just awful. I also saw another woman and we talked, but I cannot remember her name... she knows mine.

At home I finally noticed John had called. Since he called on Wednesday and I didn't call back, he was worried he was bothering me. No, I enjoy talking to him.

I actually opened the windows in the house and aired it out. I noted there was mud on the outside of one, so I took it out of the frame and washed it! (This is a first, and this is one of the old ones!)

This was the weekend of the Schumer shutdown. That didn't work out so well for him. On the 20th I once again (like every day) rejoiced that Hillary isn't the President. There are a lot of things I don't like about Trump, but I do like many of his accomplishments, and I am SO SO SO glad Hillary lost.

I went to the WPAC luncheon at the Old Spaghetti Factory (which used to be a steak house where we went at least once a year wth Rich's former landlady, and which later was sued and I was in the jury, could hardly wait until the trial was over so I could check it out. More recently it was Farrell's Ice Cream. I never made it to that reincarnation.) Anyway, there were 91 people there. I had asked my friend Gary (not the Gary I used to have lunches with in 2015, RIP, or the Gary who fixed my doorknob, who was so distraught over his wife's death but got re-married in under a year, but the Gary who was with Darlene) to join me there so I would know someone. In the event, I was sitting with Stan and Faye, so I'd have been OK, but it was really nice to have a long talk with Gary and find out how Darlene is doing. She's moved to Tallahassee with her son, and has a nice section of the apartment all her own. I need to call her one of these days. (I miss her.) Gary was there for Christmas.

I had the chicken marsala and also ice cream for dessert. I know, I know, carbs, but just this once? SO good!

Sunday while I was at Mass, the dog snatched the last three mince tarts Roni gave me off the table. Bad bad dog. (And yesterday I caught him sniffing at the last of the dried fruit.)

Marty stopped by to give me $20 for Joanna's Girl Scout cookies.

I walked to Raley's and got birthday cards for Carol and for Rob, and I found three delightful Valentines for the kids. Then I had to completely clean out my purse including Marty's money, because I thought I had more with me than I actually had. I didn't have to use the credit card, anyway.

My yogurt cups came. Gonna try that next with the Instant Pot.

I've been reading a book a day. Joanna's Boxcar Children set came and I read one of those, plus an Aunt Dimity I ran into, and I'm really chugging through the Nero Wolfes.  I'm still reading Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire; Pepys' Diary; Embarrassments by PJ Nel; Shattered, Jonathan Allen & Amie Parnes; Little Women, Louisa May Alcott; and Trio for Blunt Instruments, Rex Stout.

I didn't mention on Thursday that I'd also done more on the jigsaw puzzle, day 8 so far, and I'd scratched off North America on the map Vince and Niki gave me. I slipped and got a tish of North Dakota, the upper peninsula of Michigan (I decided Detroit airport didn't count) and some of Nova Scotia, so obviously I have to go to those places to make it right.

Yesterday I had more errands. I reconfigured the car and took Joanna's car seat inside, to wait for when Padreic is big enough for it. I took stuff to St. Vincent de Paul, stopped at the church to request a Mass for Rich on February 4, and took a bag of books (mostly Nero Wolfes) to the library. I came back with an Aunt Dimity book I hadn't read. I just told Bernadette that I was sick of cosies, but hey.

I got back to work on the "books read" spreadsheet, and behold, I was two off last year, actually read 108 books!

Today I took the dog with me in the morning in the car. I was early for breakfast so walked him around the parking lot of the strip mall. He actually behaved well. Maybe I can take him for walks again, which I haven't done for over a year.  Of course, I would still have to worry about other dogs, but it might work out.  A pleasant breakfast, 32 people or so, and I had a steak skewer skillet.  (For lunch I used my new griddle to make a proper grilled cheese sandwich. The way Rich used to make them. Yum.)

Then I went geocaching a bit: the first one I tried for the third time (2009 and 2013) and found it. I dunno how I missed it before. I also had spied a man with a Gonzaga sweatshirt so I commented... his son had gone to Jesuit and Gonzaga but quite a while after my kids. Then the second one was at a place I'd tried last year with Richard without luck, and again I had no luck today. Oh, well.

At home I started watching the current season of SVU, though I think I'm missing an episode. (Still 2 missing in season 18, too.) And I'm slowly getting through the madness of Big Cat Week and of my Christmas movie binge on TCM.

Sunday I forgot to bring the donation envelopes. I've adopted Rich's program of giving one big donation on the first Sunday of each month and not on the other weeks. But that does mean giving on the first Sunday! I'll catch them next week. At least I did remember to bring a Mma Ramotswe book to Gerrie!

About five pews ahead of me was a big black man I've never seen there before. I didn't notice him until he suddenly sat with a *thump* from standing during the prayer.  A woman sitting with her family in the same pew leaned over to ask if he was all right, and then a couple of other people came to talk to him and someone called 911 and went out to wait for the paramedics. 5 minutes later, Communion time, he was given communion, and then someone ahead of me in line told the priest about him and the priest went down to give him a blessing, too. Shortly after that the paramedics were there, but the man was well enough to walk to the gurney. I'm glad this stranger came to our church to be taken ill!

About 2:30 I drove with Pharaoh to drop off the chocolate-y popcorn I'd bought from Teddy. No way I could eat that. So I took it to Sunday Support. Imagine my surprise to find the meeting already underway. They've changed the time so people don't have to drive home in the dark. I tiptoed in and dropped off the snack and left, and came home to read the bulletin which I keep forgetting to do. I knew about membership and the luncheon this month, but I hadn't known about a trip to see an Eberley Brothers retrospective in March. Sounds like fun!

Monday morning, early, it started to rain and it rained for at least 30 straight hours. By the time it was done, the back yard was back to swampy, but at least this time the leaves are where they belong.

Monica decided to berate me publicly in Facebook. "Why do you post this stuff?" I was pretty mild telling her to back off, but I was mad, and went into messenger to tell her so. I told her she can disagree with what I post in public, but keep the personal stuff private, and besides, it's not her job to teach me to think.  Honestly, I thought I raised her better not to be rude.

I decided, after 7 years, it's probably time to change out the Sonicare brush. I checked in the back bathroom cabinet and yes, Rich had three Sonicare heads. Unfortunately, they don't fit this model too well, but I made it work. They say to change every three months. Ha.

There's lots of stuff in those three drawers in the back bathroom. Aspirin, for one. I have to go through it (yet another thing.)

Tuesday I went to the WPAC breakfast, then to the Carmichael Post Office (which is mostly self-serve and PO boxes) to finally mail off the passport application, and on to the Ford garage, downtown, to give them back the engine fluid they left in the car.

In the afternoon I popped Spooky into the carrier and listened to him meow and squeak all the way to the vet, where he was checked (he's fine) and got a shot.  I had to turn around halfway there as I forgot his stool sample, and as I'd cleaned out the box the day before I knew for sure the sample was fresh.  I called from here to let them know I'd be late, but I wasn't all that late.

And yesterday I finally got to see the kids again. Padreic cried when he was told it was time to go with me, but he had a good time at Wee Wednesday. The lesson this time was about opposites, and I think most of the kids, who seem to be 3 rather than 4, were completely baffled.  Then we looked at a painting with "warm colors" and "cool colors", again too much. They played a game with objects either "hard" or "soft" and that, too, was difficult. Arthur, who may be 4, he's talkative enough, was convinced his wooden truck was "soft."  They did better with pictures of "hot" and "cold."  However, on the whole this wasn't that successful. Padreic decided he wasn't interested in a third game, but he was well-behaved.

Back at Bernadette's, I got told that Joanna's teacher had called to have her talk to Joanna. The assignment, a 5 minute writing thing on "how I help the community", was too hard for her, she couldn't remember anything she did, and Bernadette reminded her about the things she does with the Brownies. But, when I went to get her, it appears that Joanna still hadn't done it, despite a talk with the principal and another talk with the teacher trying to talk her through it. She lost her eraser, broke her pencil, was told she could do computer once she'd finished it, and still didn't even start. I'm baffled, as she writes all the time at home. Anyway, I brought them home and read to them (although I stopped halfway through a long chapter because my voice was giving out) and Bernadette was pretty much standing over Joanna to finish the FIVE MINUTE writing. ("You'd rather have me than your Dad.")

And I left my raincoat.  With my WPAC name tag in it. Sigh.

Saturday I had dithered about whether to leave the dog out, figuring it would be at least 12 hours so I would have to give him access to the back room (with the kitty litter box, eek) but I was afraid it would be too cold for him outside. At least Andy fixed the back gate to discourage him... he's scratching at it, but I think the gate will outlive him. I finally decided that since it wasn't raining, he could probably be left out. I thought the gardeners would be on vacation, after all it's only two days till Christmas, but at the last minute I decided to leave them a note on the back gate, and it's a good thing I did, because they did come. But they didn't go in the back yard, hallelujah!

So I drove down to Elk Grove and moved my packages to Bernadette's car (except for the mandarins and stocking stuffers I smuggled in) and we packed up and drove to San Jose. I didn't get out at the Latham gas station, but Gareth decided he needed to go to the bathroom too. He opened the door and got out and Joanna closed it and he opened it and Joanna closed it... "Gareth! Go in to the bathroom!" And then he did the Midvale School of the Gifted thing of trying to go in the exit. He finally got in.

When we got to San Jose I gave the kids some stuff to take in... "Don't drop it." Of course, Gareth dropped the packages. Since they were cookies (from Bernadette) and stemless wineglasses (from me) that was less-than-optimal. However, everything survived.

Monica and Charlotte had put together a lovely brunch... chiliquilas, tamales, eggs, salad... Joanna, of course "didn't liiiike it" but at least ate the eggs. Then we opened presents. I gave each family a set of the stemless wineglasses, but since I gave Mark one and Monica one I almost didn't. Oops. They also got a big box of almons. Bernadette had commissioned hats for the kids, though Lexi got fingerless gloves instead. (I could use those... I've had cold hands a lot during this cold wave.) Joanna got a jewelry making kit of at least 1000 pieces. She absolutely loves it, and it's something Grandma could do with her, too. I got a nice tray with dried fruit and a couple of nanoblock dinosaurs. Gonna keep me busy! I apologized to Teddy for giving him a subscription that is too young.

And off to walk to Christmas in the Park. The kids got well ahead. The teens went off to get churros y chocolate (which I like better here than in Spain, so there) and I bought ride bracelets for Gareth and Joanna and 4 ride tickets for Padreic. Bernadette took them to the train and I caught up with some members of the family, then when the train ride was over she took the kids to the bigger rides and I had P. to go around with Monica and the girls. We got stuck at the adoption place with two of the most terrified cats I've ever seen. Then I took him to the car ride and helped him get a red car. He really enjoyed this. We looked at little houses and special trees, and then went to the ball drop and looked for Bernadette. Finally caught up with her and it turned out that Gareth is too big to be on his favorite jungle walk (a sort of obstacle course.) Joanna had definitely used her ride bracelet but I may have lost money on Gareth's. Bernadette took Padreic to the train again, but the operator wasn't there. Monica asked "why is she still waiting?" just as B. left the line, with Padreic in tears. That's why.

It was time to start to leave, so Joanna and Padreic went on the little Ferris wheel. He was a little dubious at first but then she held his hand and also the operator started to poke him in the leg every time he went by. Unfortunately, though, Bernadette thought the last ride could be the "Frog Drop", and he was quite happy going up, but terrified at the first drop. Joanna held his hand and we all encouraged him, so he was a little mollified by the end, but that really was a mistake.

Somewhere in there Joanna wrote a nice letter to Santa.

We went back to the house for dessert. I couldn't have any pie myself but probably should have gotten two pumpkin pies. Joanna asked if she could take the pumpkin home and ended up with both of them. OK then. It turns out Joan likes pecan so it's all good. Padreic was having fun giving Uncle R.J. fake cupcakes to eat. They left and then we did, and P. threw a real tantrum, having such a good time at Aunt Monica's he didn't want to leave. He fell asleep on the ride home, almost right away.

We stopped at a great light display. I blew it. Gareth was stimming and I commented, sotto voce, that "the Autism is strong in that one." Bernadette was filming. I sure wish I'd never remarked.. I wouldn't want Gareth to hear that and somehow be ashamed. I love him with all my heart, not any less because he's autistic. Nor any more because he's autistic. I just love the whole package, just the way he is.

Home. The dog was OK. What a good day, except for my misstep at the end.

Tuesday morning (the 19th) I went to the Widow's Breakfast, and Fay had again crocheted kitchen towels for us, and also did a needlepoint indicator of "clean or dirty" for the dishwasher. It's rather an ugly color, but I believe I'll use it anyway. She also put cookies and trail mix in the bag, but I put them too close to the edge of the table and Pharaoh got them. At least, no temptations for me.

In the afternoon Laurie came by. Her car was in the shop so Father Delgado gave her a ride over, and after a couple of hours with wine and cheese and great conversation, I gave her a ride to the shop. I realize I actually LIKE entertaining and I haven't been doing much of it. Or actually, any at all the last 6 years.

I got a notice from Social Security, a 2% raise... which somehow comes out to the exact same amount I've been getting the last three years! I may actually write them about this. Meanwhile, it looks like the tax cut will actually be good for me.

I asked Frank if he had a drill, because I can't get the hangers into the frame (I really should find Rich's drill and learn to use it. But it's only been 6 years!) He agreed he'll help me, after Christmas.

Wednesday I told Bernadette I would stick around so she could go see Lady Bird. First I took Padreic to Wee Wednesday. This was the least successful of the month... they had lots of kids, and they went through the galleries looking for winter pictures. A lot of this was over Padreic's head. The craft was making icicles from glittery pipe cleaners and beads. He very carefully put 4 beads on, was done, didn't want to twirl it, didn't want to make another. When we got home he put it on the tree. I wish Bernadette had displayed Padreic's tree that he made at my house. Heck, I wish she hadn't lost the alphabet board books, which were hard to collect.

I read to the kids, and then they played with their iPads, and I read, until Bernadette got back. I'm glad she had this chance, as she's been so excited about this movie. I know why I wasn't all that thrilled... I graduated from a small co-ed high school 40 years before Greta Gerwig and her character graduated from a larger all-girls' Catholic high school. Our experiences were totally different. Meanwhile, my girls were less than 20 years different, and from all-girls' Catholic high school, so they had more points of reference.

At home I had boiled that pork shoulder to get the last of the meat off, and used the broth to make 15 bean soup. It was good and I had enough to make two bricks for the freezer as well as this dinner.

Thursday Pagan came and we went to lunch at Fahrenheit 250. Yum. I had the One Meat lunch with cole slaw, as low-carb as I could manage. As I said, Yum. Then we went thrift shopping. I was looking at stereo slides and horrified to see Hawaiian natives referred to as "bucks." Oh, my goodness. Then, in South Sacramento, we were at a Goodwill dump-off station, all the stuff in bins and you buy by weight. I had seen a little penguin to stick in Gareth's stocking and a horse for Joanna's (I'd already given B. a notepad with a candy-cane pen for Joanna, too) and I saw a Thomas train for Padreic's, but then I saw more trains, all magnetic so they fasten together and don't need a rail, and got 13. So I called Bernadette. I thought they'd give him them from themselves, but at least on Facebook she said it was from me.

I was packing up the bean soup for the freezer and noticed the answering machine looked odd. I tried pushing buttons without luck, and thought at first it was broken, but then I picked the phone headset up and discovered the landline was down. I checked all three phones, making sure they were cradled. Nope.

Willie said he was homeless starting in mid-January. I dithered about it for awhile, then told him that while I really like living alone, if he needed to, he could stay here as plan B. He says he has a plan A but it's nice to have a backup plan in case. OK then. (I feel like I owe him for his willingness to house-sit while I was in Africa.)

I was watching Roots and Ed Asner talked about people making adjustments to maintain an evil... like, say, "body autonomy" to excuse the evil of abortion. I'm sure my great-grandchildren will look back on the likes of Planned Parenthood the way we look at slavery.

Friday I got in touch with AT&T and got a repair scheduled. I saw the "Friday at 8 PM" but glossed over the "29th" the first time. I made a quick dash to Raley's for pies. Then I realized I probably wouldn't have a phone for a week. I turned the cell phone on, and got a call... from a telemarketer!

In the afternoon I got the rest of the beds covered with leaves out of the bin. I thought the gardeners wouldn't be here the next two weeks (I was wrong. They came on Saturday. Fortunately, I left a note to stay out of the back yard.) Each wagon load took three scoops from the bin, and I moved 8 wagon loads, so I was tired when I was done.

My neighbor LaVonne brought over taffy. I've been terrible this year. I learned two things this week, that I've got to be better prepared for my neighbors and that I like entertaining.

I watched "Jailhouse Rock" (for the first time) and saw Knott's Berry Farm! The way it was on our honeymoon, before it stopped being a nice little frontier park and turned into a glitzy huge amusement park.

Friday the 15th there was WIND! It stripped all the leaves off the beds I'd put them on.
I had ghastly leg cramps that woke me up.

Then I dreamed I was on a trip, and Evan (the Honorary Geezer from Africa) was there. I said "this is quite a difference from Dubai." I wrote him on Facebook and he wrote back. Such a nice young man.

I went out to get money and buy gas and get bananas. Other than that, I stayed home and watched Big Cat videos.

Saturday
morning my power went out. I sat in the kitchen and read, and fortunately it came back in 3 hours, while I was still home. I say "fortunately" because my coffee pot was turned on. It would have been OK as it had too much coffee in it to evaporate, but still.

I caught the gardeners to give them their Christmas cards and tips. Then the dog went mad and racing to the kitchen to bark at them he ran into the water dish and knocked it all over the kitchen. So I had a swamp in the kitchen! It took two towels with two times being soaked to get most of it up. Meanwhile, they managed to get all the leaves into the bin with room to spare.

Bernadette and Rob had their annual "Hogwatch" party so I went to pick up the kids and we braved the traffic at Arden Fair to see Ferdinand. Joanna was all over the place, but luckily she wanted to sit in the back row (as far away from the screen as possible) so her wiggles only bothered me. The movie was fine, and then we came here to finish their presents. Mosaic tiles were involved, and not surprisingly, Joanna is more artistic than Gareth. My mistake was only having one thing of glue, so she was impatient and I gave in to Gareth's plea to put the glue down in the pattern instead of on every tile one at a time. So the glue smeared here and there. The projects are OK anyway. I got the kids back as it was getting dark but Bernadette's party hadn't quite finished "Hogfather." I stuck around till the end.

I realized I hadn't read Hogfather for many years, so I looked it up (not on the Pratchett shelf, and where did I hide the Christmas books?) and added it to my reading. Meanwhile, in the morning, I finished The Little World of Don Camillo. So funny! I'm now reading Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire; Pepys' Diary; Embarrassments by PJ Nel; Shattered, Jonathan Allen & Amie Parnes; Hogfather, Terry Pratchett; Little Women, Louisa May Alcott; and Before Midnight, Rex Stout.

I also ordered the DVD of Hogfather.

On Sunday the Advent wreath was lit ahead of time, so Father had no chance to forget it.

I think I'll pay less taxes with this tax cut bill. Monica says they pay $34K in income tax! OUCH. Nice to be poor! Or nice not to live in California.

I gave up on the Rosetta Stone puzzle. I'd put in 405 pieces, not 395. It's very frustrating but I would like to do it one day. I put the groups back into the box still connected, but I really need to try something else for awhile.

In the evening I went to a caroling party. It was great fun. I'd taken a veggie tray, others had brought bread and stuff. They had a really delicious tortilla soup and glogg, and then we went out and carolled around the block, singing at places that were decorated. It took two hours, and as I wasn't planning to eat dessert anyway, I came home.

I took a quick trip to the Commissary. I couldn't get regular oatmeal, but it doesn't matter, I have a spare box. I usually use the quick check, but it's Christmas time, so I went through a regular check stand so I could tip the baggers.

The cleaners came early and there were three of them (of course.)

I picked 13 more oranges. There are 5 left on the tree, but I think I'll have Bernadette's for her.

351 recordings of 65 types, 3 old SVU and 45 old CPD. (I got suspicious at the constant 373 recordings and 22%, and know for sure some CPDs were erased. So I took off a number of "Love it or List It" episodes. Once I get past all the Big Cat Week recordings, I'll be fine.) 26% clear.

Last Sunday, the 10th, at Mass, Father forgot to light the Advent Wreath. But he did go on and on and ON about Our Lady of Guadalupe.

After Mass, while I was waiting to help with giving out Communion at the home, I called Carol, but no answer. I tried again when I got home, and the second time she answered. She had called back, as well as trying the cell phone, but I wanted to use some of my time, since I had almost 400 minutes. When we did finally connect, it was a 50 minute call, which is nice. I got my travel dates lined up. The brothers are always wanting to know "where in the world is Jan Yarnot?" Heh.

Rich's next older brother broke his shoulder just before their 50th anniversary. I have such a mixed reaction to this anniversary... I'm happy for them. And so jealous.

To my utter delight, I was invited to a caroling party tonight!

Monday I was babysitting. Padreic was commenting on "coca dots" (polka dots). He was fine with the dog after initial dismay at the licking, but then the dog barked. I had to spend quite a while getting them used to each other, and then he was playing and the dog was asleep on the other side of the room. Padreic was lying down on the Big Book and hitting the button for the "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" over, and over, and over... and suddenly he burst into tears. "What's wrong?" "AGAIN!" I have no idea, but I suggested he have a nap, and he did lie down for about 5 minutes.

Then he fell asleep on the way home, and when I went to get him out of the car and he woke up. Crying and saying "NO Phawaoh!" over and over. So I guess he had a nightmare. He's been a little under the weather.

We went to get the kids. Joanna got to work on her homework and Gareth kept getting sidetracked. He seems to have trouble staying on task.

I stopped at Petsmart for dog and cat food, and got a new elk antler for Pharaoh. I have no idea what happened to the nub of the old one he had. I handed him a bone and noted he was beginning to splinter it, so I took it away. The antlers are a lot better.

Tuesday I went to the widow's breakfast. Back at home I did some digging, and worked a little on the puzzle, and called Wind Country baskets to be sure both orders were in, since I only saw one on the credit card bill.

And Fishdom kept crashing on me. I reset the iPad, following the "settings" area, and that didn't help. So I deleted Fishdom but then when I tried to get it back, the iPad wouldn't talk to the Internet. Finally I went to the laptop and found an easier reset, that actually worked. So I was re-loading the game when Vince called and so distracted. Not much of a conversationalist!

The reset gave me back the Facebook link and thus the games people have been sending me, and apparently they were saved up!

Monday I swept the leaves off the back porch, and the palm seeds in front, but really, why bother? Every time I sweep it up, more fall and it looks just the same. Plus this week the wind blew all the leaves off the garden and out of the yard onto my back porch. I had to sweep a path out.

I went really early to Supercuts for a much-needed haircut. The young man was quick and did a good job, though not quite as short as I would have liked. It still looks a LOT better. Then I made a quick stop at Emigh Hardware to ask where the fuses are. She showed me, in the plug. Mind you, when I got home I still had a hard time opening the plug, so went online. Oh, it slides! So I tried various permutations to replace the fuse, and nothing worked. Apparently it's the wire itself. Now I have a case for the tree, but I believe I'll get a different tree next year saving all these fuses and bulbs. In fact, I'll try to get next year's on the 26th, since as I say, I have a case. I wound up turning the tree so the lit string is in front. It looks OK.

The cleaners were early, and I'd just finished the bonus disc of Doc Martin.

They were done early enough that I decided to go to the movies, and saw "The Man Who Invented Christmas." It was a pleasure to see Ian MacNeice playing an entirely different part. There was also someone else from Doc Martin, though not a main character like Bert Large. I enjoyed the movie.

Tuesday was babysitting. Padreic was interested in all the toys I brought out. When I went to change his diaper I managed to get poop on the floor. Later, he was playing with the enormous number of toys I brought out and said "I found all the tools." I am reminded of Vince at this age when we'd given him a tool bench... "this 'ittle boy is workin'!"

I put batteries into the talking snowman and while I was about it, did the same for the singing snowmen. I could learn to regret that!

He was getting along fine with Pharaoh (once the dog calmed down) but then the dog barked at someone and Padreic decided he was afraid of him. So after I'd read "10 Little Toddlers" three times to him I put him down with the book and he cried and "cried." The quotes are for when he was faking it. So I put him down on the couch for a nap. After a few quiet minutes he was fine.

We had macaroni and cheese for lunch and Padreic fell asleep on the way home. We went to fetch the school kids. Joanna had had a terrible day (B. had forgotten her meds). She passed it on with her rhapsodizing about Grandma coming to Christmas in the Park (which was wrong but I had a fit first) "Grandma sees you more than I do." "It's because we love her so much." Well, that puts me in MY place. Vince told me off about that.

Wednesday was St. Nicholas Day. I woke up sad, partly because of the whole Grandma thing and mostly because of St. Nicholas Day, but then Bernadette brought me a puzzle when she brought Padreic over.

My Facebook post:
Bernadette had an old tent she wanted me to take to Loaves and Fishes. I had it in the car, thinking I would add the bag of motel toiletries and take it in tomorrow. But I was a bit faster with Padreic today than I thought I would be, and would be driving right past L&F, so even though the motel soaps weren't with me, I decided to drop off the tent. Great timing. We got to the Crocker Art Museum just as it opened, for Wee Wednesday. We went to the Tot room, which Padreic loves, and I wondered if he'd be OK to leave it for the Wee Wednesday program. He was perfect, plopped right down on a mat for the story, which was a book about "lines." Then we walked on lines, a straight line, a curved line, a zigzag line. And on up to the Diebenkorn exhibit to plop down on another mat and look at lines in the painting. Padreic didn't contribute, but he took everything in, and when it was time for the activity he carefully covered the zigzag line on his paper with plastic bugs, and did a second one with gems. I was really impressed with him, for his first time. It could have gone either way, and I'd have tried again in a month if he wasn't ready. Afterwards we went to the WingDings exhibit, which is for the littles. He got too tired going back to the car (he's still limping a little, and it's hard for him) and slept going home (for the second day in a row.)

We all stopped at the park after school because I usually rush past it so I can read to the kids and get home before the bad traffic, but since I was waiting around for Rob to get home after work, I had time. Padreic got very tired again. Anyway, a satisfactory day.

Joanna still had a sad day, and playing in the park didn't help much. They ran ahead of me, and I'd forgotten to lock the door. Oh, dear. I read them another chapter of "Betsy and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill." Later, after her homework was done, Joanna was buried in "The Secret Garden", no pun intended. That book was what she got from St. Nicholas.

And I drove home with the carseat! I have been coming up Watt, long trip, but probably better than the freeway. I don't get home till dark.

I realized that I didn't have the book "Little Women", which was always one of my favorites, so I ordered it, So now reading:
Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire; Pepys' Diary; Embarrassments by PJ Nel; Shattered, Jonathan Allen & Amie Parnes; The Little World of Don Camillo, Giovanni Guareschi; Little Women, Louisa May Alcott; and The Golden Spiders, Rex Stout. (I've gotten up to 1953.)

I printed up my Passport Renewal Form. Then I made mistakes (with my own cell phone number!) on the second page.

Fishdom finally opened a new aquarium but I had to wait to play a couple of days till the "levels" came up, to get the decorations. Once more I've played beyond where they are, so stopping until it's worth it to me to play. I imagine I'll have Christmas decorations pretty soon.

I left really early on Thanksgiving so I could go with Roni and Teddy to his hockey game in Fremont! I put Pharoah's food in the doghouse so it wouldn't get rained on, and I figured that way he wouldn't eat it all immediately. He's afraid of the doghouse for some reason, and I planned to get it hauled away, but thought I would at least try to give him some comfort overnight.

It was foggy to start with but at least traffic to Novato wasn't too bad. I could see it was worse in the other direction. I arrived before 9 (which is when I told Roni I would call if I couldn't make it.) We drove to Fremont and then it was wait and wait around, so I walked over to the REI and picked up a geocache. Then I was starving, so had chicken strips (and they took so long they probably had to go catch a chicken!) and watched the beginning of the game from the bar, then joined Roni for the second two periods. Teddy's team lost, 9-2. This was not a surprise, as apparently this year they're pretty awful.

Most of the team parents, from Santa Rosa and Sebastipol and points north, were staying in a hotel in Milpitas, but Roni had to go back for Thanksgiving and then would be there Friday and Saturday nights. The game on Friday was early and she would have to leave Novato by 6 AM! We started back and got into a couple of major traffic jams before we got to Oakland.

We were back in Novato about 3:45 or so. R.J. had been cooking the turkey. He made me a margarita (he makes wonderful margaritas!) and I made up the relish tray. Then I told everyone (Monica and Mark, Genevieve and Charlotte, as well as Roni's family) not to touch it till R.J.'s mother and brother came. (Roni said they wouldn't care but Jan (the brother) actually did admire it and try the rolled olives.) Teddy called it a peacock!! Next year I will do this again, as it comes out better than the train, but also we won't wait for the slowpokes to arrive!

I was feeling really bitter about Bernadette and family, in Oregon. I asked if they'd seen Marie, the ostensible reason we'd gone there, and B. said no, they were really there for Joan. Lucky Joan. Grrrr. Monica doesn't understand "Grandma camp." I pointed out that a lot of people do that (we never did, because usually we lived too far away and then my Mom lived with us.) She says she enjoys her kids and it's not that long until they're gone. In any case, it's still true that Joan sees more of the kids than I do. I said it would be like I saw more of their kids than Helena. Turns out she doesn't see that much of them anyway, but of course having her husband ill made a difference. Anyway, Monica was amazed at how much I see the kids. Once a week, and some weekends, not all that much. If Rich were alive, it would likely be less, but hey, what else do I have to do?

Allan and family were at Max's girlfriend's parents this time. I was sorry to hear that, had hoped to see them. I'd been thinking of visiting a couple of weeks earlier, before I had the leaky pipe problems.

It was a nice dinner. Kathy is not looking well, as they warned me, but was pleasant enough, no worse than usual.

After everyone left I told R.J. he had to try the Amarula. He did, and I don't think he liked it much, but I did! I had had an awful lot to drink this day.

Friday I woke impossibly early and couldn't get back to sleep. So I read, and got up when Roni started moving around, and packed up and left just before she and Teddy left for Fremont. It was a bit foggy here and there, and I actually appreciated it over the Yolo causeway, where it kept the rising sun out of my eyes.

The dog was fine, but hadn't had any food. He may have tried, because some was spilled out of the bowl but it was pushed back in the doghouse further than I'd put it. He was really happy to see me, and very hungry. Also, apparently he didn't sleep at all, because he was pretty well comatose the rest of the day. (So was I, in fact.)

I finished In The Best Families, which was wonderful. Wolfe leaves the house for 5 months(!) in order to get rid of the gangster. I am now reading:
Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire; Pepys' Diary; Embarrassments by PJ Nel; Shattered, Jonathan Allen & Amie Parnes; The Little World of Don Camillo, Giovanni Guareschi; and Murder by the Book, Rex Stout.
